Demetri Psaltis, the Thomas G. Myers professor of Electrical Engineering at Caltech (California Institute of Technology) is Dean of the School of Engineering and Professor and Director of Optics Laboratory at EPFL.

Professor Psaltis is a world-renowned expert in the area of optical information processing, holography, optical networks, imaging, optical memories and optical devices, and is known for his pioneering work in holographic memory and optical neural networks. His fundamental work has had a significant impact in the scientific community, with more than a thousand citations. He served as director of the NSF Research Center on Neuromorphic Systems Engineering from 1996-1999, and is currently leading the multi-institutional DARPA Center for Optofluidic Integration.

Professor Psaltis obtained Bachelor’s degrees in economics and engineering, and Master’s and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. In addition to his important contributions in fundamental and applied research, Professor Psaltis has obtained at least 39 patents and co-founded two start-up companies. In his 26 years at Caltech, Professor Psaltis made a lasting impact on several generations of students with the quality of his teaching. He has advised more than 40 PhD students, many of whom have started their own companies or gone on to successful careers in academia.

Alex Papalexopoulos is president and founder of ECCO International, Inc., an energy consulting company that provides consulting services and expert advice on electricity market design, power systems, energy management systems and software issues within and outside the U.S. Prior to forming ECCO International in 1998, Alex was a director of PG&E's Electric Industry Restructuring Group in San Francisco, California. In that capacity he became heavily involved in all aspects of the California restructuring from defining the market rules, drafting filings for the FERC, designing market protocols, developing functional specifications, and working with the software solutions vendors to implement operational and business software to support the California markets. He has an extensive background in power systems design, simulation, analysis and computational techniques with specialization in grid and merchant functions, pricing, power systems operations, power generation, transmission planning, transmission and power contracts, system dynamics and real time control. He has made substantial contributions in the areas of network grid optimization and pricing, ancillary services, congestion management, competitive bidding, forward and real-time energy markets and implementation of EMS applications and real time control functions and forecasting in a utility environment.

Dr. Alex Papalexopoulos received the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Diploma from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece in 1980, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia in 1982 and 1985, respectively. He has published numerous scientific papers in IEEE and other Journals. He is the 1992 recipient of PG&E's Wall of Fame Award, and the 1996 recipient of IEEE's PES Prize Paper Award. He is a Fellow of IEEE for his contributions to Optimal Power Flow and related technologies in electric power systems.

Georgios Papafotiou was born in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1974. He received his Diploma and his PhD in Electrical Engineering in 1997 and 2002 respectively, both from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In 2003 he joined the Automatic Control Laboratory at ETH Zurich, where he held a Senior Research Assisstant position. His research interests were in the field of modelling, analysis and optimal control of hybrid systems, focusing on power electronics applications.

In 2006, he joined the ABB Corporate Research Center, Dättwil, Switzerland, where he is currently working on the development of modern control and estimation methods for power electronics applications.

Ο κ. Μιχάλης Μπλέτσας είναι επιστημονικός συνεργάτης του Media Lab στο Τεχνολογικό Ινστιτούτο της Μασαχουσέτης (MIT).
Ήταν ένα από τα ιδρυτικά στελέχη της One Laptop Per Child, μιας μη κερδοσκοπικής εταιρίας αφοσιωμένης στην έρευνα για την ανάπτυξη ενός laptop πολύ χαμηλού κόστους – μιας τεχνολογίας που θα μπορούσε να αλλάξει ριζικά το πώς μορφώνονται τα παιδιά στον κόσμο. Κατά την διάρκεια της θητείας του στην OLPC, συνέβαλε στον βιομηχανικό σχεδιασμό, τα ηλεκτρονικά καθώς και το λογισμικό του laptop XO-1 της OLPC και έθεσε τις βάσεις για τους διαδόχους του.

Διετέλεσε διευθυντής πληροφορικής στο MIT Media Lab όπου σχεδίασε και υλοποίησε το μεγαλύτερο μέρος των συστημάτων διαδικτυακής υποδομής. Οι ερευνητικές του δραστηριότητες περιλαμβάνουν πειραματισμούς με ασύρματα δίκτυα τα οποία υλοποιούνται χρησιμοποιώντας καινοτόμα, χαμηλού κόστους συστατικά για να παρέχουν ευρυζωνική πρόσβαση στο διαδίκτυο σε περιοχές χωρίς υποδομή. Είναι πτυχιούχος Ηλεκτρολόγος Μηχανικός του Αριστοτελείου Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης και M.Sc. μηχανικός υπολογιστών του Πανεπιστημίου της Βοστόνης.

Ο κ. Βασίλειος Μακιός γεννήθηκε στην Καβάλα. Έλαβε Δίπλωμα Ηλεκτρολόγου Μηχανικού από το Πολυτεχνείο του Μονάχου (1962) και Διδακτορικό από το Max Planck Institut fur Plasmaphysik Garching (1966). Από το 1962 έως το 1967 ήταν Επιστημονικός Συνεργάτης στο Max Planck Institut fur Plasmaphysik στο Μόναχο, και από το 1967 έως το 1977 διετέλεσε καθηγητής στο Τμήμα Ηλεκτρονικών του Carleton University στην Οτάβα του Καναδά και το 1977 έγινε επίτιμος καθηγητής. Το 1975 εξελέγη καθηγητής και διευθυντής του εργαστηρίου Θεωρητικής Ηλεκτροτεχνίας και Παραγωγής του τμήματος Ηλεκτρολόγων Μηχανικών και Τεχνολογίας Υπολογιστών του Πανεπιστημίου Πατρών, όπου συμμετείχε στη διδασκαλία και την έρευνα σε μικροκύματα, οπτικές επικοινωνίες, και δίκτυα επικοινωνιών, με έμφαση σε τηλεπικοινωνιακές εφαρμογές και κατασκευές πρωτοτύπων, όπως επίσης και στην ανάπτυξη νέων κεραιών για κινητές επικοινωνίες. Ασχολήθηκε επίσης με την έρευνα στα φωτοβολταϊκά συστήματα.

Έχει κάνει περισσότερες από 150 δημοσιεύσεις και κατέχει πολυάριθμα διπλώματα ευρεσιτεχνίας στις ανωτέρω περιοχές, ενώ έχει συμμετάσχει στην οργάνωση επιτροπών συνεδρίων της ΙΕΕΕ και Ευρωπαϊκών Συνεδρίων. Είναι κάτοχος του ασημένιου (1985) και χρυσού (1999) μεταλλίου της Γερμανικής Εταιρείας Ηλεκτρολόγων Μηχανικών (VDE). Το 2001 έλαβε από την ΙΕΕΕ το Chester Sall Award της ΙΕΕΕ Consumer Electronics Society για τη δεύτερη καλύτερη δημοσίευση στα περιοδικά της για το έτος 2000. Είναι μέλος της ΙΕΕΕ, του Canadian Association of Physicists, της German Physical Society, του VDE, και του ΤΕΕ. Από το 2003 έως το 2005 διετέλεσε Γενικός Δ/ντής και Πρόεδρος του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου του Ερευνητικού Κέντρου Αθηνά, από το 2003 έως το 2008 διευθυντής του Ινστιτούτου Βιομηχανικών Συστημάτων και από το 2005 έως σήμερα κατέχει τη θέση του Αντιπροέδρου του Δ.Σ. του Ερευνητικού Κέντρου Αθηνά και του Γενικού Διευθυντή της Ελληνικής Πρωτοβουλίας Συνεργατικών Σχηματισμών Corallia.

P. Takis Mathiopoulos received the Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the University of Patras, Greece, in 1979, the M.Eng. degree in microwave engineering from Carleton University, in 1983, and the Ph.D. degree in digital communications from the University of Ottawa, Canada, in 1989. From 1982 - 1986, he was with Raytheon Canada Ltd., working in the areas of air navigational and satellite communications. In 1989, he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver, BC, Canada, where he was a Faculty Member for 14 years, last holding the rank of Full Professor. He is currently teaching part time at the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications, University of Athens, Athens, Greece. He is also a Guest Professor at the Southwest Jiaotong University, Chengdu, China. He is currently the Director of Research with the Institute for Space Applications and Remote Sensing (ISARS), National Observatory of Athens, where he established the Wireless Communications Research Group.

Over the years, he has supervised university- and industry-based R&D groups and has successfully acted as the Technical Manager for large Canadian and European R&D projects. He has been the Principle Investigator for more than 40 research grants and has supervised the theses of 30 graduate students. His research contributions include original research in the areas of optimal communications over fading channels, channel characterization and measurements, and advanced coding techniques, including turbo codes, diversity and synchronization, HDTV, neural networks, smart antennas, UMTS and SUMTS, software radios, MIMOs, and UWB. He was an ASI Fellow, a UBC Killam Research Fellow and a co-recipient of the best paper award from the 2008 International Conference on Communication, Control, and Signal Processing (ICCSP).

Ioannis Athanasiadis is a research scientist with the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IDSIA), in Lugano, Switzerland. His areas of expertise include intelligent information systems, environmental informatics, software agents, decision support systems and machine learning. He is also a Fellow of the Ecoinformatics Collaboratory at the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics, University of Vermont, USA. During the period 2000-2005, he was an associate researcher with the Informatics and Telematics Institute, CERTH, in Thessaloniki, Greece and a founding member of the Intelligent Systems and Software Engineering Lab.

Ioannis holds a Dipl.Eng. (MSc) and a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering, both from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He is a member of ACM, Computer Society, IEEE, iEMSs, and a licensed professional engineer, full member of the Technical Chamber of Greece. He received the iEMSs Best Student Paper Prize (June 2004), was a finalist for the ITEE Best Paper Award (May 2007), nominated for the Best Paper Award of the SWESE Workshop (June 2007). In September 2007, he was awarded the 2007 EURO SIWzie Award, by the Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization. In January 2008, he was granted a "research scientist excellence deferral", by the Greek Ministry of Defense.
